ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Peoples Party’s senior leader and former Interior Minister Rehman Malik passed away in Islamabad in the wee hours of Wednesday. He was hospitalised due to Covid-19 for the last few weeks.
He was seventy years old.
President Dr Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan. PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, former president Asif Ali Zardari, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death Rehman Malik. Commiserating with the bereaved family, they prayed for the departed soul.
Malik’s sons Omar Rehman Malik and Ali Rehman Malik Wednesday paid tribute to their late father. Speaking at a news conference here along with Khalid Malik, they said that the death of their father had devastated the whole family.
“Today has been a very sad day for me and our family. Baba (father) was a best friend of me and the whole family, more than a kind father,” said Ali Malik. He said love and affection for Pakistan was in the late Rehman Malik’s veins. “He was a hard working man who believed in constant struggle and never considered any task difficult or impossible. His devotion to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto was emotional. Whenever Benazir Bhutto was mentioned, Baba became emotional,” he added.
Ali Malik said his father was loyal to his country and his party all his life. “My father always took a firm stand on the Kashmir issue. We are grateful to all Pakistani and foreign friends who are with us in this difficult time. We are grateful to all those who prayed for our father during his illness,” he said.
He said while Rehman Malik was in the hospital, the whole nation was appealing for prayers. “We will carry forward the mission of our late father Rehman Malik which is selfless service to the country and the nation,” he said.
Meanwhile the PPP mourned the death of the senior PPP leader. Former President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Interior Minister, Senator Rehman Malik and said that as Interior Minister he played an important role against terrorists and extremists. His services to the country are unforgettable.
The former president said that Rehman Malik was a steadfast and loyal companion. “Pakistan People’s Party shares the grief of the family. In this hour of sorrow, the Pakistan People’s Party leadership and activist are with the family Rehman Malik,” he said.
He also prayed to Almighty Allah to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength and fortitude for the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with equanimity.
PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Secretary General Nayyar Bokhari, Vice President Sherry Rehman, Farhatulah Baber, Nafisa Shah, Natasha Daultana, Sehr Kamran and others sent condolence messages to the bereaved family.
