LAHORE - Former prime minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) central Punjab president Raja Pervez Ashraf on Sunday said that in-house change was the only option to strengthen the democracy and Parliament in the country. Addressing a press conference along with party’s general secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza at Model Town here, the former prime minister said that positive signs were coming from the opposition parties regarding moving a no confidence motion against the prime minister. “The PPP believes in bringing change only through the democratic way,” he said, adding that bringing a no confidence motion against the PTI-led coalition government in Punjab was easy as the government had a thin majority in the province. While responding to a question, Pervez Ashraf said that the governments did not hold long marches as they were focused on solving the problems of the masses. He termed the statement of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi regarding a long march towards Karachi childish. He said that the PPP had a bright chance of winning the upcoming local bodies’ elections as well as general elections in 2023. When asked to comment on the talk of presidential system, Raja Pervez said that the government wanted to divert attention of the people from the real issues. He further said: “This is not one unit; we have Constitution.” He also said since day one it had been the stance of the PPP and former president Asif Ali Zardari that democratic institutions in the country should be strengthened. On the occasion, Pakistan Kissan Itehad Mandi Ahmedabad Circle President and ticket-holder for the seat of chairman from Union Council (UC) 106 Mian Sardar Khan Wattoo and ticket-holder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the seat of chairman from UC-116 Mian Altaf Hussain Wattoo joined the party. Speaking on the occasion, PPP General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza welcomed the farmer leadership to the party fold, saying that all sections of the society would have to play their role for the development of the country. He said everyone should join hands against inflation and unemployment. He said that the PPP would hold a countrywide tractor-trolley march on Jan 24, followed by a Feb 27 long march, adding that the march would prove to be a turning point in the politics of the country.
