How far can a journalist go for sensationalism? Let's pose this question to Mubasher Lucman, who is touching new lows with every passing day. In fact he has added a whole new dimension in his profession: ‘revenge journalism’. He switches channel with lightning speed and somehow manages to extract 'sach' out of everything. Full marks for his talent, but sometimes we don't need that much 'sach'.
Yesterday, he did a show on Channel 24. The guests of the show were ex-husband of Reham Khan, and his present wife. If you have seen the show, you don't have to read this further and if you have missed it, do not dare go anywhere.
Even though, it is unethical to single out an individual when the media on the whole is turning into nasty business, but some cases are special. They have such a bad influence that you have to point them out. Let me give you the summary first: Lucman blatantly attacked Reham Khan in last night's show with collaboration of her ex.
I am no fan of Reham Khan because she is turning into a notorious ‘bhabi’ as well. Her intentions have been clear from the day she started the show called Tabdeeli, a perfect poke, if your ex is Imran Khan. The connection is obvious, and I don't know, or care, who started it first but this trend of egoistic journalism is providing a shaky base and bad example for young journalists.
The 5 cheapest comments by Mr Lucman last night were...
1. Kaash aap Reham ko thora arsa aur talaaq na dete to PTI buch jati
2. Kia Reham aap ko kutt lagati thi? (He used this word around 10 times)
3. Reham ki degree asli bhi hai?
4. Kia Reham Khan aadatan jhooti hain?
5. Un ka asli naam kya hai? Mujhe to waldiat bhi jali lagti hai
Hilariously, in-between these questions, he categorically mentioned that he does not interfere in people's personal life. He said that since he is an "investigative journalist" and Reham has pointed fingers at him, he would go to ‘any extent’ to defend himself, which he did for sure. You can clearly see the logical fallacy in the above statement: in his own words, he became "gossips waali aunty" from an "investigative journalist" in seconds.
Was demeaning Reham Khan that important for Mr Lucman? Throughout the show, his attitude was disgusting and an aura maintained as if he is the master of people's fate. He also served a legal notice to Reham. Whatever the case is, how can a responsible journalist spend the entirety of a one-hour show to boost his personal ego?
In last year's oxford dictionary, a word "hate-watching" has been added, which means witnessing something on TV with a preset idea of hating it. There is lot of hate-watching in Pakistan. And to be honest, purposeless gossips interest everyone, including myself, but where would it end? Authorities should really take care of what and who is going on air, otherwise coming generation of journalists will turn into night crawlers.
