Dysfunctional Justice Zahid 'resigns

ISLAMABAD - Justice Zahid Hussain Bukhari, a dysfunctional judge of the Supreme Court, tendered his resignation before the Chief Justice on Thursday, the sources told The Nation. The sources said that the summary of Justice Bukharis resignation has been sent to the Ministry of Law and Justice that would forward it to the President of Pakistan for approval. Justice Zahid has been dysfunctional since October 2009 and he had to retire on December 2014. He is among those nine judges, including Justice (Retd) Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry, Justice (Retd) Abdul Hameed Dogar and dysfunctional judges Justice Hamid Ali Shah, Justice Hasnat Ahmed Khan, Justice Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi, Justice Yasmin Abbasey, Justice Jehan Zaib Rahim and Justice Syed Sajjad Hussain Shah, against whom the apex court had to frame contempt of court charges, but proceedings had been suspended as the seven-member bench was hearing their intra-court appeals. Justice Zahid was appointed as judge of the Lahore High Court on May 21, 1998 and was confirmed on May 19, 1999. Justice Zahid was made Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court in the retirement of Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry in December 2007. He was elevated to Supreme Court on April 12, 2009 and he took oath on April 13, 2009. Justice Syed Zahid Hussain took oath on PCO 1999 as a sitting judge of Lahore High Court. Justice Zahids counsel S.M. Zafar said that his clients case was different from other PCO judges as his fresh appointment in the SC was made on 14th April 2009, while the judgment on PCO came on 31st July, 2009. A counsel for another PCO judge, against whom the proceeding are pending in the apex court, without mentioning his name, told The Nation, Now we have to see that after the resignation whether Justice Zahid would be exonerated of the contempt charges or not? He said if that happens then the court has to pardon Justice (Retd) Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry, Justice (Retd) Abdul Hameed Dogar as well.
