Oil Piers at KPT running at half capacity

KARACHI - The three Oil Piers at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) are presently running at their half capacity of the total handling ability of 24 million tonnes due to non-handling of High Speed Diesel at the port, it was learnt. Sources told The Nation that if KPT sets up a connectivity line for HSD with Pak Arab Refinery at Port Qasim it will make the oil piers capable of working at their full capacity. They said that the KPT reduced HSD handling capacity and is now dealing in only jet oil while HSD is being handled by the Port Qasim due to indifferent attitude of the management. The sources pointed out that the management could resolve the issue if they devised a formula to share responsibility of connectivity line with Parco at Port Qasim. They said the KPT lacks qualified staff to manage the port in accordance with the regional requirements and competition. Moreover, all 30 jetties of the port require either maintenance work or re-construction in order to manage the port operations efficiently by using latest tools and instruments, they further said. The official spokesman of the KPT when contacted said the KPT has qualified staff and added that all port infrastructure requires regular rehabilitation and reconstruction, on completion of the life of the infrastructure, which is carried out using the latest technology on the advice of the consultants. He further said that the ports planning and development department has required qualified staff.
