ISLAMABAD - Two bomb explosions rocked capital city in the wee hours of Saturday, killing a watchman and injuring a passerby.

According to Islamabad Police, first blast occurred in Supper Market at 2am. Watchman Muhammad Azam, 66, got killed on the spot as the bomb went off.

“It was a planted bomb placed in a drum at Supper Market,” Muhammad Shabbir, a sub Inspector of Kohsar police station told The Nation.

After few minutes, another bomb blast was reported at Karachi Company, the commercial hub of Islamabad. Luckily, it failed to hurt anyone as shops were closed by the time the explosion came.

Alarmed by the bombings in the heart of the capital, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police has tightened the security in the city and deployed additional policemen in various areas to avert any further untoward incident.

Islamabad Police Senior Superintendent Muhammad Ali Nekukara directed his subordinates for effective security measures in the city, besides enhancing street patrols. He ordered combing and search operation in slum areas and keeping extra vigilance at entry and exit points of the city. He also directed for extra deployment of police and additional security measures at important locations of the city.

“The SSP directed to ensure high vigilance and strict security measures in various sectors and residential areas of the city,” a press note issued from SSP office stated on Saturday. Nekukara said that police commandoes be deputed around sensitive locations and important buildings. He also directed all police stations to form special police teams for effective patrols in their respective areas.

Rescue15 has also been put on high alert and told to keep in touch with the heads of police stations. The SSP directed to specify halting points for strict checking of those entering or leaving the city. He asked all SPs/ASPs/SDPOs to launch crackdown against anti-social elements, miscreants and suspected elements.

The police officer also directed for special search of the forest and green belts in and around the city. Special police deployment should be ensured at sensitive and important buildings while police officials in civil uniforms to be assigned the task for keeping vigilance against suspicious elements, the SSP ordered. He directed beat officers to remain alert while Falcon and Eagle Squads have been also assigned the task for effective policing and patrols in the city.
