KARACHI-The awards ceremonies to honour the style icons of fashion, television, film and music are becoming rare. The PTV, Nigar Awards and many others have become things of the past. HUM Network is, however, continuing with the tradition of holding awards.
The HUM Awards were held in Dubai two years ago, which could be compared with award ceremonies of other countries. Then last year the first QMobile Hum Style Awards were held on the same scale as in Dubai. This year the second edition of QMobile Hum Style Awards raised the bar further in entertainment. The awards held at Expo Centre were a treat to watch as they brought together most of the top celebrities of Pakistan under one roof.
The awards began with a bang. Yes talented Saba Qamar presented a dance performance with a troupe of foreign and local dance performers on the song ‘Bang Bang’. The original track had been written on her point of view about the past one year and how the showbiz stars spent it. She ridiculed some artistes while in the end called for tolerance of their tantrums since they were stars. The artistes pointed out but not named were Mahira and Fawad Khan. She called for everyone to try to become stars.
The show hosted by Saba Qamar, Farhan Saeed and Ali Kazmi was attended by socialites and leading people of the entertainment industry. Besides Saba power packed performances were given by Natasha Khan, Asim Azhar, Syra Shahroz, Ayesha Omar, Ahsan Khan, QB, Farhan Saeed, Atif Aslam and Ilona Bekier, a choreographer and dancer from Warsaw, Poland. They were assisted in the performances by 14 foreign dancers as well as local dancers.
The awards show was choreographed by Shazy and Ghani while Hunny and Ehtesham Ahmed were in charge of costume design. Celebrity styling was done by Rao Ali Khan, Alizeh Pasha and Sabah Bano Malik, hair and makeup by the NPro an N-Gents team at Nabila’s while the PR was handled by Take II.
The performance of Ayesha Omar on English and two Bollywood tracks was remarkable. She has polished her dancing skills and all her dance movements were done with such ease and grace that was simply amazing.
Another unforgettable moment was when Syra Shahroz after her dance performance challenged Asim Azhar to a dance performance. She said she was doing so as he had called her unprofessional. The dance performance well choreographed in advance, however, was nothing out of the box and had routine steps. The little bit of drama could have been better designed.
Farhan Saeed was very interactive with the celebrities sitting with the audience. On his insistence veteran actress Bushra Ansari, Sajal Ali and Urwa Hocane sang songs with the last two just singing a few lines. Bushra no doubt has a wonderful voice and charmed the audience. Cricket star Shoaib Akhtar, however, did not oblige Farhan and refused to sing.
Another interesting incident involved cricket star Shoaib Malik, who had especially come all the way from Dubai to participate in the awards. When he was asked by Farhan how he felt playing with young players the cricketer was quick to reply that he still young. Later very interestingly he was called to collect Meesha Shafi’s award of most stylish female performer. Why he was asked remains a mystery as when he came to collect it on stage he said he had never met her in his life.
On the whole the show was good and very entertaining. However, Saba Qamar’s impersonation of Mahira Khan and announcements that Shah Rukh Khan will be attending the show could have been avoided and some other segment staged in its place. Also the skit that made fun of fashion designers though had some reality in it but have been more subtle than being so blunt. It must have had some designers sitting in the audience blushing.
