Pakistan witnesses bumper cotton crop, claims IUB VC

Bahawalpur   -  After so many decades, Pakistan has witnessed a bumper cotton crop of 8.5 million bales during this year due to the government’s farmer friendly policies.

In an exclusive interview with Controller News (Punjab) Radio Pakistan, Vice Chancellor, Islamia University, Bahawalpur Prof Dr. Athar Mahboob said that every million bales of cotton leads to increase of export worth one billion dollars through textile industry which is good sign for our national economy.

He said that the university’s Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute developed three varieties of cotton which have been sown over 40 per cent of the total area of cotton fields across the country. 

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob said that these genetically modified varieties are capable of meeting the challenges of climate change, soil issues, and virus attacks on the cotton crop.  He announced that during the coming years, Islamia University, will also introduce new varieties of cotton seeds so that Pakistan can again become a big player in the field of cotton production at international level.

Cholistan rally to promote positive image of Pakistan: Commissioner 

Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Captain(Retd) Muhammad Zafar Iqbal visited Cholistan to review the arrangements for the International Cholistan Desert Rally.  

Regional Police Officer Sher Akbar, Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Irfan Ali Kathia, District Police Officer Muhammad Faisal Kamran, Additional Commissioner Consolidation Tariq Mahmood Bukhari, 4x4 Club official Zain Mahmood, representatives of Chamber of Commerce and officers of relevant departments were present on the occasion.

Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Captain (Retd) Muhammad Zafar Iqbal inspected the route of the rally.  He reviewed the arrangements at Dilush Stadium, Qila Dera and TDCP Resort.  Commissioner Bahawalpur also inspected the site for traffic management plan, security plan, alternative routes system and other activities.  

Speaking on the occasion. Commissioner Bahawalpur said that the International Cholistan Desert Rally is a means of promoting the positive image of Pakistan and its holding also benefits the local economy.  

Events will also be held and this mega event will be celebrated as a cultural event, he said.  

He said that an exhibition of local industries and handicrafts would be organized in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Chambers of Commerce across the country would be invited on the occasion and their stalls would also be set up.
