GUJRANWALA - A Rawalpindi-bound train derailed near a level-crossing in Gujranwala city on Thursday evening, killing a woman, her daughter and another passerby.
Sources said the railcar, which departed from Lahore around evening hours, derailed near Gondlanwala railway crossing after passing through Gujranwala’s old city railway station.
Witnesses said the locomotive and four bogeys ran off the track and after colliding with an electricity pole screeched to a halt alongside the railroad, but crushed three passersby to death.
Damages would have been immense had the train been moving at a faster pace, sources said while adding Gujranwala city administration and Railways officials rushed and completed rescue work in about three hours.
The bodies were moved to the district headquarters hospital. There was no immediate identification of the victims, among them a woman and her daughter. Doctors at the hospital said they also gave treatment to a number of passengers with minor injuries. Following the incident, an inquiry was initiated, and the track was also being cleared.
