Family of Peshawar encounter arrestee appeals to court

Peshawar - Family members of a man arrested during Thursday’s operation in Hayatabad have filed a writ petition in the court, seeking probe into the incident, as they said their son had opened firing in self-defence.

The writ petition has been filed by Hussain Ahmed Khan, a resident of Hayatabad, while the respondents included the KP Inspector General of Police, Capital City Police Officer, SSP-operations, and other police officers from the area.

The family of the arrestee, Hamza, said that Hamza had fired shots just in self-defence because the family already had an old enmity. They said the family had already lost two members to the enmity in recent months.

They said the CCTV footage and other evidences be checked to probe the incident in which two policemen were martyred. The family members of the accused said Hamza is an educated young man while their entire family had not been involved in any crime.

It merits a mention here that an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Riaz and Constable Jafar Ali lost their lives when the cops raided a home in Hayatabad where a local resident opened fire on the police party during a raid.

The police said the accused who had fired the shots was named Hamza, a resident of Bannu. Hamza was later arrested and weapons seized from him.

He was presented before a local court on Thursday where he was remanded in police custody for three days.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the cops laid their lives in line of duty and they would get the proper Shaheed Package as they had conducted the raid on a tip-off about the presence of an outlaw. The official said that one cop was even shot outside the house.

Meanwhile, a strange situation emerged when ISKP claimed responsibility for the killing of two policemen in the Hayatabad operation and later the family moved the court to probe the incident claiming the arrestee was an educated young man.
