Leave the party

It is wrong for President of the republic to be partisan and become a tool in the hands of his parent party. Can a class teacher join his students in the arena as a player? Can a judge become party to a case? The president symbolizes the unity of federation. He is supposed to be a monitor, an overseer and a supervisor. He ought to correct things, when the ruling party, or the opposition, makes a mistake or works against the people or country's interest. If we look at the past history, practically all our presidents either created a king's party or encouraged some elements to foster under their patronage. Look at General Musharraf, who went to various party rallies around the country in those funny hats and turbans. Mr Zardari should not make the same mistake or else he will be as discredited in public as his predecessors in the presidency have been through out our history. Can't the PPP government make mistakes, or act incompetently? When and if that happens, there should be somebody to reprimand them and make them mend their ways. We should learn about the parliamentary system from India. It is ok to learn from India on this score. One should learn from wherever one can, even if it be China. Why be shy? -AMJAD HABIB MIRZA, Lahore, via e-mail, September 9.
