Through the media, it has come to my notice that the government is holding Shandur Polo Festival in Chitral (Malakand division) in order to raise funds for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). As far as I know, the government is annually spending Rs 9 million on Shandur Polo Festival out of which about Rs 5 million is embezzled by the corrupt official. There is no chance of fund raising through the Shandur Polo festival. There is no ticket on the match. It is not like a cricket tournament. I wonder how the authorities will raise funds, especially as they have to make an initial outlay of Rs 9 million just to hold the Polo festival during the ongoing war in Malakand division? -LAGHAL KHAN, Peshawar, via e-mail, June 14.
