Mehdi says 'I'm not NRO beneficiary'

LAHORE - Former advisor to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Press Secretary to Mian Nawaz Sharif, Saeed Mehdi has clarified that he neither filed any petition for acquittal nor was among the beneficiaries of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO). Addressing a news conference at Lahore Press Club on Thursday, he explained that according to NRO list, he was being marked as an accused in two cases one of which was Polo Ground case which was still pending and no hearing had so s far held. The other case was about his assets but the court had acquitted him in 2001, he added. Mehdi disclosed that he was victimised by former president Pervez Musharraf, as he had pressurised and forced him during his detention in jail to become an approver against President Asif Ali Zardari but he refused. He said the old lists compiled by previous governments had been re-opened for interrogation purpose only but some hidden elements were using it to defame some targeted personalities. I decided to resigned willingly which is purely a personal one and no one forced him to do so, he clarified. He resigned only in respect of the statement issued by his party leader Mian Nawaz Sharif who advised the persons falling in NRO list to resign, he concluded.
