ISLAMABAD   -  Prime Minister Imran Khan Tuesday approved Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

According to a notification issued by the PM Office, the incumbent DG ISI Lt Gen Faiz Hamid will continue performing his responsibilities till 19th November and new DG ISI Lt-Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum will assume the charge of his new assignment on 20th November 2021.

“The prime minister has seen and approved the appointment of Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as director general Inter-Services Intelligence, with effect from November 20, 2021, from the panel of officers at para 6 of the summary,” says a notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office dated October 26.

The selection process was finalized after the prime minister interviewed a panel of nominee officers, recommended in a summary, sent by the Ministry of Defence, followed by a consultation meeting with Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa this afternoon.

The decision to this effect was taken on Tuesday after a two-hour long meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and DG ISI Lt-Gen Faiz Hamid at the PM’s Bani Gala residence here.

A statement issued from the PM Office says Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa called on Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday. The statement said the meeting was part of the ongoing consultations process between Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff about the timing of change of command in ISI and selection of the new DG ISI.

The official statement said during this process a list of officers was received from the ministry of defence.

The Prime Minister interviewed all the nominees. The names of other nominees were not shared by the PM Office. However, according to sources names of Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, Lt Gen Asim Malik and Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali were in the summary and these three candidates were interviewed by PM Imran Khan.

“A final round of consultations is held between the Prime Minister and the Chief of Army Staff today”, the statement said.

After a detailed consultative process, the name of Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum was approved as new DG ISI, the official statement said. Interestingly, a notification was issued by the PM Office and marked to the Secretary Ministry of Defence as originally a summary was received from the defence ministry containing the names of three senior officers as candidates for DG ISI post. Under the rules, after signing the summary the defence ministry issues notification on the basis of the approved summary.
