Our own personal Nero

In his letter in the Nation of May 17, Malik Tariq raised the question: Can anybody imagine a senator in the US or a parliamentarian in the UK threatening to bring a major financial hub such as Karachi to a standstill, if his/her demands are not met, or a congressman make a similar threat to grind to a halt New York or Chicago? I would like to give him a simple answer. First of all, those countries have a mature and developed democracy while we are still finding our feet. The political parties in developed countries also do not have militant wings thus they could not get what they want by gun totting.
We all pray and hope that Pakistan keeps being a democratic country but the masses have started crying out against such harsh rulers who have not done anything to make their lives better. The country is floundering and burning while our own personal ‘Nero’ is playing the fiddle.
