Enigma?

This is with reference to Mr Mansoor Khans write-up published under the heading Investigators fail to probe Aafias case in The Nation of April 23. Before this some Mr Klasra had also complained about complacency of our government on the matter pertaining to Dr Aafias case. I had also collected some details on the subject from various sources and sent an article to all English newspapers with the caption 'Prisoner Number 650 that was published in Sunday Plus magazine of The Nation on April 18, 2010. Both Mr Klasra and Mansoor Khan are correct in blaming the media and government for their failure to pursue the case of this citizen of Pakistan. Yvone Ridley, a British journalist first called Dr Aafia 'the Gray Lady 650 but later retracted to say that Prisoner 650 was not her and there was no 'Gray Lady in Bagram. So there is the question that if it was not Aafia, who fired the two shots at a US captain in Bagram? The indictment of Dr Aafia is based on that one allegation related to the incident at Bagram. This is the story printed by all media sources. If she was not the person who fired at US military captain on 31st July, 2008, why was she punished for it. In March 2003, the FBI is said to have issued a 'Wanted notice for Aafia. The 'information that Aafia was seen at Karachi Airport on April 30, 2003 and then again in Karachi on December 25, 2004 may have been fabricated to absolve US officials. Similarly, the story of her capture at Chaman in 2005 and then her immediate release also appear cooked-up, possibly by her ex-husband Amjad Khan. The periodical appearances of Aafia from April 2003 to January 2008, verified by various sources within Pakistan, also tells you something about the level of vigilance of our own and foreign intelligence sleuths. If you ask me, this is a clear case of wrongful involvement of an innocent woman. First charged as an Al-Qaeda suspect, she suffered incarceration of five years in illegal custody. Now she has been indicted on a much softer chargefiring a couple of shots upon US military personnelwhen she physically seems incapable of committing such an act. -BRIG (Rtd) A.Q ANJUM, Rawalpindi, April 27.
