peshawar - A trader hailing from Chitral district was killed by armed men in the city amid rising crime rate in the provincial capital during last several months.
Crime rate in the provincial capital has gone up during last one year, according to observation of such incidents during the period.
Police said the attackers sprayed bullets on Hafiz Mohammad Idrees who was going home from work, and fled the scene.
Also on Saturday, a couple was killed after they had reportedly contracted a love marriage. The man hailed from Akora Khattak area of Nowshera district while the girl was from Swabi district.
A day back on Friday, a woman and her two brothers were shot dead in the provincial capital in separate incidents of firing.
It merits a mention here that soon after the incumbent Capital City Police Officer Abbas Ahsan took charge as head of Peshawar Police, the crime rate has registered a sharp rise. Four banks were robbed in recent months, wherein the armed robbers took away millions of rupees in Peshawar and Khyber districts, both districts are under the supervision of CCPO Peshawar.
During interaction with journalists in several press briefings, the CCPO said: “Some criminal gangs may have got activated in Peshawar, thus causing an increase in crime rate.”
A senior official said that a major problem is weak prosecution in the criminal justice system. He said that after arrests, criminals are often release by courts due to weak prosecution.
Another security official told The Nation on condition of anonymity that Peshawar Police were eating away FIRs (first information reports) in various criminal incidents but the cops do not take pains to trace the cases. “When the cases are not traced, it means a field day for criminals,” he added.
