5 militants downed in encounter

KARACHI - Police claimed to have gunned down five alleged militants in an encounter in the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.
The encounter took place in Nawab Goth of Shah Latif area where heavy police contingent conducted a raid on a tip-off. As many as 500 police personnel of District Malir headed by SSP Malir Rao Anwar participated in the operation.  
Police said the plain-clothed police personnel were deployed in the area for the surveillance and monitoring of militants. “We were tipped that the militants are staying at the hideout of Enayat Swati chief of TTP-Swat group in Karachi,” claimed encounter specialist SSP Rao Anwar. Police faced massive resistance during the encounter as militants’ fired and hurled hand grenades at the police during the raid.
The encounter continued for at least one hour and during exchange five militants were gunned down. In addition to that the police claimed to have apprehended over half dozen suspects and shifted them to an undisclosed location. The militants killed have yet to be identified. Their bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsies. “We are sure that the killed men were militants as they even attacked us,” said SSP Anwar. “But we are not sure about their identities, Enayat Swati is yet to be identified too.”
Police claims to have recovered a map of Razzaqabad Police Training Centre from the militants killed during an alleged encounter. They also claim to have recovered a suicide jacket, Kalashnikovs, pistols and explosive materials. Police officials claim that the militants killed were planning to carry out terror activity in a city, particularly attacks on law enforcement agencies while further investigation was underway.
The encounter area belongs to Swati and Mehsud tribes where nearly two dozen houses are present. The area is known for hosting militants and the gang war elements. Mobsters belonging to Sohail Dada group of Lyari, was found hiding here.
Meanwhile, five accused of reported robberies were arrested in an encounter with Mominabad police at Orangi Town on Wednesday. Station House Officer (SHO) of Mominabad Police Station Shahzad Ilyas said on a credible information, the police conducted a raid in Shahjahan Chowk Orangi Town and recovered 5 TT pistols along with rounds, 8 cellphones and looted cash.
The accused have been identified as Ali, Mian Hussain, Jan Sher, Gul Muhammad and Jawed. The SHO said they were habitual criminals and involved in several robberies.
ROAD ACCIDENT LEAVES TWO DEAD
At least two persons were killed while eight others injured as two speedy vehicles collided here on Wednesday. According to rescue sources, the accident took place at Mauripur Road where a collision between the vehicles left two people dead. The bodies and the injured people were shifted to hospital.
