CVP wire retrieval op performed at RIC

Rawalpindi - The expert cardiologists of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology successfully performed central venous pressure wire retrieval operation of a patient brought to the hospital from Kharian in critical condition.

Cardiologist RIC Dr Tahira Sadiq said that a 50-year male patient was admitted in Kharian hospital and undergone an endoscopy operation where the doctor left the wire inside the patient’s body which could not be retrieved there.

The patient was stabilised first at the RIC and then the doctors operated the patient to retrieve the wire. She further said that CVP line is used to measure central venous pressure. The patient’s Haemoglobin level was 5, she added.

Dr Tahira said that she used snare catheter to take the wire out and successfully retrieved it in 10 minutes, adding that if the wire breaks inside the body during retrieval, then the process could take hours.

She said that the RIC had established its credibility in serving the public with state of the art facilities and best trained dedicated doctors and the successful CVP wire retrieval is its proof. She said that the institute had expert and committed doctors, paramedics and nurses to deal with critical patients.

Meanwhile, Jaffar Khan, a Pakistani cardiologist, secured the prestigious 2018 Young Investigators Award of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society for conducting successful set of surgeries on humans using a proprietary procedure.

He used a procedure that is medically described as laceration of the anterior mitral valve leaflet to prevent outflow track obstruction, nicknamed with the acronym LAMPOON. “LAMPOON is a procedure I invented at the National Institutes of Health in America. It is a ‘keyhole’ cardiac surgery technique that resects heart tissue for the first time using minimally invasive techniques,” Jaffar said. “I am now the clinical lead for an FDA-approved clinical trial together with Dr Robert Lederman, head of the cardiovascular intervention branch at NIH”, he added.
