Kaira rejects delayed election reports

ISLAMABAD – Federal information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira on Saturday said the reports about electing the president for another term from the present assembly and delaying the polls for a year were baseless assumptions and no such proposal was under consideration.
In an exclusive chat with TheNation during a ceremony, Kaira stated that the tenure of the assembly could only be extended in case of a natural calamity or any other untoward development in the country.
He again claimed that they had no intention to re-elect the president through the sitting assembly, adding that holding general elections a few months before the end of the five-year tenure was a possibility.
He further said that holding the lection process on time after the completion of tenure was also not a bad idea.
The minister further said it was possible to discuss the schedule of next polls and the caretaker setup in the round-table conference being organised by the MQM, if all the parties agreed to participate in the event. Kaira further noted that taking the other parties (he referred to those which not in the Parliament) on board over the caretaker setup was a good option.
