Punjab to provide 0.17m seed packets to growers

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Punjab Agriculture Department will provide 170,000 packets of quality seed to the vegetable growers during Rabi season 2011-12 under Chief Ministers Kitchen Gardening Programme. According to an official handout issued here on Tuesday, this was revealed during a Training Programme held at AARI, Faisalabad in order to train Master Trainers to promote Kitchen Gardening and transfer latest technology to the vegetable growers. Dr Noor-ul-Islam, Director General Agriculture (Research), Ayub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad highlighted the importance and objectives of Kitchen Gardening project. He emphasised the need for enhancing cooperation between Agriculture Extension and Research Wing for the benefit of farming community. He exhorted the extension workers to use latest technology for transfer of agriculture recommendations to vegetable growers. Muhammad Asif Khan, Project Director Fruit and Vegetable Development Project informed that in Pakistan per capita vegetable consumption during a year is only 50 kg whereas world average consumption is 105 kg per capita. He told that minimum per capita vegetable requirement is 73 kg. He further informed that in China per capita vegetable consumption is 311 kg/year and in USA vegetable consumption is 198 kg.
