Pakistan was created on the basis of the Quaids two-nation doctrine. In undivided India, the Hindus were educationally, politically and economically far more advanced than the Indian Muslims. On the strength of this superiority, the Hindus recklessly exploited the Muslims. In order to rescue the Muslims from the exploitation, some Muslim leaders resolved to launch a movement for the creation of an independent homeland for the Muslims. The movement was launched. The Quaid led the struggle. The Muslim masses injected riverfuls of their blood into the movement. The move was a glorious victory. Pakistan was born. Unfortunately, the baby had hardly opened its eyes when the Quaid left us. The Quaids departure created a more horrific tragedy than the tragedy of the Muslims exploitation by the Hindus. Now in Pakistan the powerful Pakistanis started exploiting the Pakistani masses. As Pakistan grew in years, the exploitation grew intenser and intenser. Unfortunately, the entire history of our 'independence is a history of powerful Pakistanis exploiting the powerless Pakistanis. The masses have been protesting against the exploitation. But their protests are creation of their utter ignorance of a dire fact. They just dont know that the exploiters have a very simple ethics. The exploiters ethically believe that the Hindus had no right to exploit the Pakistanis. Only the Pakistanis have a right to exploit the Pakistanis. The extreme poverty of the masses is a creation of the indigenous exploitation. Mere survival has become the most gruesome problem for the masses. Sometimes, the starvation pities the starver and mercifully kills him. If the starvation does not kill, then the starver kills the starvation by killing himself. Recently, some residents of the NWFP demanded that the province should be renamed. Some other residents protested against the demand. Some of the protesters lost their lives during the protest. Anyway, the province is renamed. But viewed within the dire circumstances from which the country is suffering, the renaming is an utterly futile exercise. The very foundations of the country are being shaken by certain horrific problems. The masses have been committing suicides because of extreme poverty. Will the renaming fill the empty stomachs of the masses? Ask the politicians who have won their renaming war. The country is flooded with social crimes. Will the renaming fling the crimes out of the country? Ask the renamers. The country is corruption-ridden. Will the corruption be terrified by the renaming and flee the country? Ask the renamers. The countrys problems demand that instead of wasting our energy on petty affairs, we must use every single drop of our energy for pulling the country out of its horrific problems. When the Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa was called NWFP, it must have smelt extremely nauseous to those who were determined to rename it. Now that it is renamed, it must be smelling like paradise to them. But lets forget about the smelling. There is a vital question. Will the renaming automatically solve the ages-old social, political and economic problems of the region? History tells us that a mere renaming of a region is a pure vanity. No doubt, the renaming must have given emotional pleasure to the fighters for the renaming. But mere emotional pleasure cannot solve the ages-old regional problems. Would that the war for the renaming had been a war for a social revolution A mere renaming of a region is a pure stupidity. Let alone a region. Change the very name of a country. It would make no difference to the countrys existing circumstances. Unfortunately, the very blood of our country is contaminated with social, political and economic diseases. Only a massive blood transfusion can solve the problems. No change of name can bring about even an iota of general improvement. There are numerous hospitals in the country which were established before independence by some non-Muslims. The hospitals are named after the founders. Suppose we were to rename them. Would the souls of the founders be hurt? No at all. Rather the souls would laugh at us The writer is an academic.
