First big rain claims five lives in City

LAHORE At least five people were killed and 21 others were injured, most of them seriously, when four buildings caved in during Wednesday mornings heavy rain in the City, police and rescue workers said. According to Rescue-1122 officials, three labourers were killed while 11 others received injuries when the roof of a truck-stand and an adjacent workshop caved in. The incident occurred near Nain Sukh Chowk in Shahdara. The Rescue workers said the labourers were fast asleep when suddenly the roof collapsed during heavy rain. As a result, Mohammad Akram, 35, Bashir Ahmed, 40, Muhammad Amin, 30, and an unidentified 30-year-old man, died on the spot. Rescue workers and Edhi ambulances raced towards the spot and launched the rescue operation. They shifted the at least 11 injured to the Jinnah Hospital, where the condition of two of them was reported to be critical. The fifth man died when the roof of his house collapsed in the Manawan area. The youth, later identified as Muhammad Saleem, was also sleep inside the house when the roof caved in early Wednesday. Similarly, three people sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Jinnah Hospital when the roof of their house collapsed in the Dubbanpura area. Meanwhile, in the after-math of the rain in the City the roof of a house situated in Walton caved in with a bang, leaving seven people of a family injured. They included two children. The injured were shifted to a local hospital by Edhi workers and Rescue 1122. Meanwhile, three brothers shot dead a 40-year-old woman during a scuffle occurring due to flushing out of the rainwater in the Yuhanabad area, the vicinity of Nishtar Colony, on Wednesday, police said. Police investigators said that Shahzad Masih along with his two brothers exchanged hot words with next-door neighbor Ghazala Bibi over the issue of flushing out the rainwater following Wednesday mornings rain. She also retaliated in the same tone. Both the parties got infuriated. One of the three brothers later opened gunfire on Bibi, killing her on the spot. The killers managed to escape.
