JI demands withdrawal of Fata/Pata regulation

LAHORE Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hasan has termed the newly issued Civil Power Regulation for FATA and PATA a violation of basic human rights guaranteed under the constitution and a licence for extra judicial killings. In a press statement issued here on Wednesday, he said the new regulation was worse than the black FCR as it gave the Political Agent the powers of awarding death sentence and life imprisonment besides heavy fine which were not available even under the FCR. This regulation was oppressive and would lead to greater unrest and chaos in the country and must be withdrawn, he said. The JI chief said the tribal people had been suffering under the oppressive FCR for the last 100 years and Prime Minister Gilani had in his opening address in the National Assembly, announced FCRs withdrawal. Later, in August 2009, President Zardari had announced reforms in the FCR. However, instead of making any reforms, the PPP government, with the connivance of the ANP, had issued the Civil Power Regulation perhaps to conceal the extra judicial killings in the tribal areas and to give legal cover to such illegalities.
