ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Principal Secretary to Prime Minister what is the status of a summary sent by Establishment Division to PM for reposting Zafar Qureshi, Additional Director General FIA, in NICL scam. Justice Tariq Pervaiz, a member of the bench of the apex court hearing NICL multi-billion scam, inquired from Khushnood Lashari, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, what has happened to the summary sent for Prime Ministers approval regarding Qureshis reposting. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that Secretary Establishment Division himself had stated that he wrote a letter to PM Secretariat for reposting Zafar Qureshi. He said when an officer was honestly investigating the case then why there was need to transfer him, adding Qureshi was able to recover Rs1.6 billion in NICL scam. Since Queshi has been removed the investigation in NICL case has to come a standstill. Justice Tariq Pervaiz said that the government should be happy and assist the Supreme Court in recovery of looted money. He said, Let the nation gain and no body would lose if Qureshi is brought back to National Insurance Corporation Limited case. Babar Awan said the government was implementing courts orders and in Sarfraz Shah murder case obeying SC order it posted out the DG Ranger and Inspector General of Police, Sindh. He said that neither the secretaries nor the federal minister has any interest in removing Qureshi from NICL case. The Chief Justice observed then repost Qureshi. Earlier, Babar Awan appearing on behalf of Interior Secretary Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Establishment Secretary Abdul Rauf Chaudhry and Khushnood Lashari, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, in multi-billion NICL case submitted separate replies of the secretaries. The apex court has issued notices to three federal secretaries for wilful defiance of apex court order in transferring Qureshi from NICL case. The secretaries are accused of endorsing the letter written by Director General FIA Malik Iqbal, who has now been appointed chief of National Counter-Terrorism Authority, and issuance of notification for removing Qureshi from NICL case. The judgement in contempt of court against Malik Iqbal has been reserved for writing letter to the Ministry of Interior that challan had been submitted and the recoveries had been made. On the basis of DG FIA 'sletter Establishment Division issued notification for transferring of Qureshi from the case. The case is adjourned till 1st July 2011.
