LAHORE-The final of the Defence Day Cup Basketball Tournament will be played today at International Abdul Nasir Basketball Court Karachi. The event is being organized by Karachi Basketball Association.
Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon will grace the occasion as chief guest and distribute cash and other prizes among the players. Earlier in the last league match, Karachi Basketball Club defeated Bahria Colts by 49-41. From the winning team, Abdullah Imam scored 20 points, Rajkumar Lakhwani 14 and Daniyal Ahmed 10 points. From the losing team, M Saqib scored 12 points and Israr Ahmed Khan 10.
Zafar Iqbal, Amir Sharif and Muhammad Ashraf were referees while Zahid Malik, Naeem Ahmed and Mumtaz Ahmed performed the duties of technical officials. KBBA President Ghulam Muhammad Khan, Secretary Tariq Hussain and Media Coordinator Ijaz Ahmad Qureshi were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon has expressed the hope that Karachi Girls Basketball Team will perform well in the National Girls Basketball Championship to be held in Islamabad. He said this during a meeting with Karachi women basketball team and management of the sponsor ‘Har Pul Taza Chai’ at the Commissioner’s House. KBBA President Ghulam Muhammad Khan, Shahida Parveen Kayani, Muhammad Shakeel Jan, Noreen Shakeel, Ghulam Abbas Jamal and others were also present on this occasion.
Commissioner Karachi said: “There is immense talent in every sport in Karachi and if we succeed in finding, training and grooming this talent, in every team of Pakistan, more than 50 percent players will be from Karachi. The way the KBBA is organizing the basketball events in Karachi, it is helping the game gain further familiarity and popularity in the city.”
He expressed his gratitude to sponsors’ Muhammad Shakeel Jan for making arrangements for the team’s visit. In the ceremony, coach Zaima Khatun, chief selector Muhammad Yaqoob and manager Usman Ali Khawaja also expressed their views and presented a report on the team’s performance. In the end, souvenirs were also distributed by the sponsors. Karachi girls basketball team will leave for Islamabad on October 1 to participate in the National Girls Basketball Championship.
